Great
things in Cambodia never stop in their famous Angkor Wat and giant elephants.
If you want something unique to do in the city of Siem Reap Cambodia exploring Tonle Sap Lake would be great.
This great lake in the heart of
Cambodia is happen to be the largest lake in Southeast Asia. This lake
connects three (3) countries namely a part of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The flow of water in Tonlé Sap changes
direction twice during the course of the year, and the lake expands and
contracts with the seasons.
Our
Tonle Sap Lake tour was never been part of our plans, but Tohor the
passionate van owner offered us to spend the rest of the day in Siem Reap by
exploring the beauty of their Tonle Sap Lake. He even gave us discount for the
tour and allow us to explore it as him as our tour guide at the same time.
We
had our short stopover in a nearby lake station to pay for the tour, and then
headed directly to the boat station for the tour. We started the tour with
tranquil tick while noticing the lake view.
Nearby
the lake we’ve seen floating houses, floating barangay hall and even floating
chapel in the local village where the lake is still part. We also had been
given the chance to stop at a Buddhist Monastery wherein we got the chance to
know more about Buddhist cultures and beliefs. Tohor gave us more background
about their country, religion and cultures there. We also have given a short
moment to take photos with a young monk.
"Monks are not allowed to talk to a
girl since their main mission in life is to stay holy and give honor to their
religion."
In
the lake there is also a floating restaurant where there you could try a unique
crocodile dish. A mangrove tour is also another good thing to experience in the lake
and visiting the crocodile farm at the same time. There is also a separate tour package offered
in the lake comprising all of the tour experiences mentioned but that is for a
higher price.
We
spent few hours in the lake waiting for the lovely sunset. Honestly, it was late afternoon when we
started the tour so we returned when the sun was fully set and down. We’ve purchased
drinks and snacks just within the lake. Amazing it is that at the lake there
are vendors with their floating boats selling snacks and drinks, who are not afraid with the
lake water’s current and earning money in the middle of the lake.
Aside from
the vendors, there are also few fishermen in the lake. Tonle Sap Lake is also
the main source of food on its nearby barangays. And Tara boat is the name of their local boat which serves as their
mode of transportation while going through in and out the lake.

Cambodia is really a good country to experience several unique journeys and adventures. And as a newbie in this so called wander world, I fully enjoyed our stay in the country particulary in Siem Reap.
